Characteristics

A proper and complete protection against corrosion of metal parts or machinery, either inside a storage or transport medium such as a wooden case or lying on a shelf in a warehouse, can only be achieved if the goods and the desiccants are protected by a so-called barrier that prevents the entry of moist air.

The definition of a barrier is

a packaging material with a maximum moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) of 0.5 grams/m2/24 hours

From these barriers one can manufacture bags or covers of all shapes and sizes. Barriers also protect against water (rain or sea water), hand perspiration, dust and bugs.

Types

The most commonly used barriers are

Polyethylene foil of at least 0.05 mm thickness

This is a cheap and relatively effective barrier, suitable for protection of up to 2 months. Not suitable for continuous outdoor use. Desiccants must be used inside the package to absorb moisture.

Alu - barriers, complying with MIL-B-131 and TL 8135-003.

These can be manufactured in various qualities, laminated with with plastic foil or textile for greater strength. Their MVTR is minimal and is achieved through the aluminium foil that is used. Desiccants must be used inside the package to absorb the moisture trapped inside the package and the open ends must be heat sealed.

They are very suitable for exports and military use and are ideal for storage periods exceeding 6 months, withstanding very high temperatures and high Relative Humidity conditions.

Vacuum packaging is possible with these barriers.

Our Alufoil is provided in standard rolls of 1 x  200 meters.

C-foil

C-foil is used to wrap small metal parts and crank shafts. It consists of a plastic film strengthened with fabric and coated with a self-adhesive wax on one side. The waxed (sticky) side should be applied to the surface of the article with the fabric on the outside. C-foil is grease and water proof.

Because it is self-adhesive, it is ideal for direct wrapping of small machines, tools, motors etc.

Articles must be cleaned of hand perspiration and other soiling and can then be wrapped directly in C-foil, closing the ends with a double fold and tape.

Heat Sealers

Normal heat sealers used for polyethylene do not work with aluminium barriers.

We supply the 220V, 300W Packrite continuous hand rotary heat sealers, which seals quickly and easily over multiple layers of barrier material. Temperature is adjustable from 90 to 260 C. The sealing speed is up to 10 meter per minute, depending on the weight of the materials used. The width of the seal is 25 mm.
